TRUHLAR and TRUHLAR, L.L.P.
     April 1, 2008 Newsletter

Bob and Doris have been named again as Super Lawyers.  Bob is listed under Employment and Labor;Doris is in the Family Law category.  The Super Lawyers are chosen by Colorado attorneys, who are sent ballots to vote for other practitioners to be included (you can't vote for yourself).  The Super Lawyers are all listed in this month's 5280 Magazine; pictures of Bob and Doris appear.

Debora Jones, family law attorney who has been at Truhlar and Truhlar for three years, recently became a proud grandmother for the first time.  Deb's oldest daughter, Stephanie and her husband, Shawn Lee, had a baby girl, Madison, in January, eleven weeks before the baby's due date.  After eight weeks in the hospital, Madison is at home, gaining weight regularly and doing well.  She weighed only 2 pounds, 9 ounces at birth, and is now up to a whopping 7 pounds plus.  She has now been taken off of oxygen.  Deb spends a couple of evenings each week at Stephanie's house to give Stephanie and Shawn a break from the demands of a premature baby.  Stephanie is a pharmacist and works as a pharmacy manager at a King Soopers store.  Deb and her husband have two other children, Ashley, who is 13 years old, and Matthew (Matt for short), who is 11.

Deb remains active with her homeowners' association, for which she is the vice president, and she also still serves on the Board of Trustees at her church.  Deb reports that the part her husband, David Folkman, hates is that Deb drags him into her projects by volunteering his help.  For example, he reluctantly wears the bunny suit for the Spring Treasure Hunt in the neighborhood park and at church (even though Dave is Jewish).

Rick Dindinger, attorney with Truhlar and Truhlar for two and one-half years, is enjoying coaching the Her-icanes, his daughter's aptly named soccer team.  The 7-year-old girls play in Littleton Soccer's U-7 recreational league, and the eight team members give Rick fits.  They all wear purple tie-dyed socks that don't exactly match their blue and white uniforms.  The girls are often more concerned with how their hair looks than with the direction of the ball.  And just when one thinks that hair is the paramount concern, a player will suddenly pour out a sports drink on top of her head.  As demonstrated by Gatorade commercials (Rick wonders if they air during Hannah Montana), this method of cooling down is certainly effective; unfortunately it often leaves the player with nothing left to drink for the rest of the game.

Rick continues to serve on the Centennial City Council.  In November 2007, voters in Centennial formed a Home Rule Commission to draft a city charter.  That task is completed; now the charter will go to a city-wide vote on June 10, 2008.  Rick is urging Centennial citizens to vote "yes" on Home Rule.  Among other reasons, Rick prefers for the city to be governed by locally elected (and accountable) officials, rather than by state legislators who may not have any concern about the local affairs of Centennial.

Ivy Truhlar, office manager and middle daughter of Bob and Doris, is celebrating her fourth anniversary with Truhlar and Truhlar this month.  Ivy continues to be our computer guru.  Ivy's husband, Happy Rice, recently took a new job with the Anschutz Center Pavilion, in the Radiation Oncology Department. Congratulations, Happy!

Carol Zumwalt, who currently works at the front desk and is a paralegal/legal secretary, is still coaching the Varsity Coed Cheerleading team at Chaparral High School in the Douglas County School District.  This was the first year that Chaparral had a coed team, and it was an extremely successful debut.  The team placed second at the league competition and eighth at state.  The 2007-08 cheerleading season is now officially finished; however, Carol already is gearing up for 2008-09, with tryouts coming up in mid-April.  Way to go, Carol!  Carol will soon be moving from the front desk to the office that is next to the front desk--a promotion to a job that has more paralegal duties.

Carol will be graduating from the Arapahoe Community College Paralegal Program in July.   Her undergraduate degree is from the University of Northern Colorado.

Doris has been chosen as one of the seven members of the 18th Judicial District Nominating Commission.  Counties in the 18th District are Arapahoe, Douglas, Elbert and Lincoln.  The Commission, which has three attorneys and four non-attorneys, selects the three nominees for each judicial opening on the District Court and County Court in the 18th Judicial District.  The selection of individuals to serve as members of the Nominating Commission is made by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, the Attorney General and the Governor.  There were about 40 applicants for the opening.

Bob and Doris have been alumni participants in the University of Denver College of Law Business Law Society.  They recently spoke to students at a meeting of the society, and attended the group's annual dinner.  Bob also participated in a poker tournament sponsored by the organization, along with the Truhlars' youngest daughter Holly, who is a first-year law student at DU.  Bob and Holly won coffee mugs and law school shirts.

Rick and Bob will be judging the DU College of Law   Moot Court competition for appellate arguments in April.

Speaking of Bob and Doris' youngest daughter, Holly (the first-year law student at DU), she earned the award for getting the highest grade in her Civil Procedure class during the first semester.  Way to go, Holly!  The Truhlars report that Holly had "fantastic" grades her first semester of law school.
